SUMMER Tech 2023

Description:  Green codes are here to stay—landscape design requirements, days of the week water restrictions and labelled product purchasing mandates, to name a few. This class will provide the student with the latest in green code developments and how the implementation of these codes will impact the green industry. A special focus will be the International Green Construction Code, EPA WaterSense and IAMPO’s Green Plumbing Code. Strategies to comply and actually profit from what appears to be a restrictive environment will be discussed.

About the Instructor: Ted Moriarty is beginning his 35th year in the irrigation industry. He has worked as a branch manager, sales manager and area manager in distribution. He has worked sales representative for two major international irrigation equipment manufacturers. Ted now owns and operates Smart Watering Company, a Boston MA based irrigation consulting business specializing in water management issues, industry training and servicing and retrofitting residential and commercial irrigation systems. He holds IA Certifications in Design (commercial), Contractor, and Landscape Irrigation Auditor. Ted has been training industry professionals for nearly all of his years in the industry. In 1998, he became an Irrigation Association instructor, and has developed and updated several IA classes. In addition to this, he has developed curriculum for and provides training for the licensing requirements in North Carolina, New Jersey and Connecticut. Ted also provides training for water purveyors and government agencies.

Description: A successful installation or renovation project depends on determining the best and most feasible course of action to take. This requires making decisions in the field regarding three key elements – Sprinkler pressure, spacing, and flow based on the manufacturer’s specifications. This leads to good distribution uniformity and therefore conserving water while keeping the plants healthy. This class will address the fundamental hydraulic principles supporting these three important elements, with an emphasis on spacing and nozzling. Also discussed will be how to address difficult areas which need to be irrigated with the goal of mitigating water waste, such as overspray. New techniques using different approaches for mixing and matching different irrigation equipment will be covered.

Description: This course is designed to share with you the basics of proper pump selection, pump sizing, power considerations, filtration, Variable Frequency Drives, and maintenance. The goal is to be comfortable selecting the correct pump and understanding why the pump you may be replacing has failed.

About the Instructor: Jim Gurzler of Reasonable Outdoors LLC has over 25 years of experience with irrigation, including golf course, commercial and residential applications, along with extensive pump experience and has served on the GCSANJ education committee and on the Pocono Turfgrass Board as Editor.

Description:  This class will cover how to: understand two-wire systems, compare two-wire systems to conventional basic troubleshooting principles directed to two-wire, and wire connections.

About the Instructor: Craig Borland has worked for Toro Irrigation/Irritrol for the past 26 years. During that time he has managed the Controller Repair Department and the Service Center Repair program, and also held positions as Warranty Administrator, Inside Sales rep, and is currently working as Field Service Manager in the Irrigation Division. Craig provides technical support for the Engineering, Legal, Technical Support and Marketing departments, and the Micro division, among many others. He holds a B.S. in Fruit Science with a Minor in Ornamental Horticulture from Cal Poly–San Luis Obispo. He has taught classes for the Irrigation Association for the past 18 years, and also serves on the IA Education Foundation Committee as a Subject Matter Expert.

Description: This class will cover how to: understand basic hydraulics, learn the rules of 3 in determining system capacity, evaluate current system hydraulics, and system troubleshooting (with the least amount of digging).

Description: Learn to understand in an informal setting the actual application of water to specific landscapes. This is not like other courses-classroom discussions and your input will make this an informative experience. Learn how to create water budgets and irrigation schedules based on site data, how to document water usage and costs and plan for drought situations. By the end you will be confident in your management choices and know that your clients are getting the very best information any irrigator has to offer when it comes to water conservation.

He has completed projects from small residential systems up to 100-acre sites (in phases)-Homes, Shopping Centers, Corporate Office Parks, Athletic Fields and Condominiums in New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Florida, Arizona and California. Additionally, he has installed large scale landscape and drainage projects for the HOA market.

He is a Licensed Irrigation Contractor in NJ, an IA Certified Irrigation Contractor, an IA Certified Irrigation Technician, a Certified Back Flow tester, an NDS Certified Drainage Contractor, a Rutgers Certified Fertilizer Applicator and an IA Authorized Regional Instructor. He has written and taught many Continuing Education Credit courses and Webinars for the National IA, the NJ Irrigation Association, the NJLCA, the MNLA and the CICA. Description:  Master wiring for today’s sophisticated control systems. This session will cover different types of transformers, proper phasing (primary and secondary), diagnosing problems using different meters, wire sizing for communication cables and two-wire systems, DC controllers, special solenoids, and proper splicing techniques.

Description: A great course for anyone from beginner to advanced. Many updated designs, techniques, uses and a brand new concept that combines the pressure regulation of spray heads with dripline applications by utilizing Control Kits to offset the high cost of pressure regulating mist heads. Additional topics include water movement in soils, calculating water requirements and proper scheduling to round out an information-packed course.

Description: Irrigation scheduling involves many inputs to create a program that applies the appropriate amount of water at the correct time. This course will help you stay a step ahead of your competitors by recognizing and utilizing the various factors that go into proper programming. You’ll learn about Soil Texture, IR and PR when designing a program, how to select controllers/sensors, and get your customers on board with water saving by demonstrating your knowledge of the economics of water conservation.
